A new community mural has been unveiled in Niddrie after volunteers completed an 18 month project to restore a previously dilapidated mural.

The mural is on the lane on Niddrie House Avenue near the Niddrie Community Shop.

The Niddrie House Community Mural Project was organised by Calum Baird, an events organiser in the area.

The previous mural had become unrecognisable, with significant amounts of graffiti being placed over the years.

Calum told Deadline News: “The project started around 18 months ago when I noticed the old mural was in disrepair, and I remembered the last mural getting done as a young child .

“I contacted Jennifer Elliot, who has experience organising murals as she helped to coordinate the greenhouse mural in Craigmillar.

“We applied for funding for the mural, and conducted surveys in the local community for ideas.

“Out of the blue, the housing association, Hillcrest, who owns the houses in the area where the mural is based, offered us the funds to pay for it.”

Calum previously told The Edinburgh Reporter in November 2025 of fundraising efforts to restore the mural, including a Christmas Daytime Disco.

The art was created by artist Calum Carr, following an in-person consultation in the community which was attended by 50 people.

After six days of painting, the mural has now been completed 

The unveiling ceremony, which took place on Thursday evening consisted of a speech from Calum Baird and his grandfather, Bobby McEwan, who authored a poem painted on the far-right hand side of the mural.

Bobby, who is now 86, has lived in the area since he was six years old.

Calum Carr also gave a speech, while a resident of the local care home cut the ribbon to unveil the mural.
