Police Scotland has issued a reminder to the public about bird nesting season.
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, all wild birds, their nests, and their eggs are protected by law.
It is a criminal offence to intentionally or recklessly, take, damage, destroy, or interfere with a nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, or obstruct or prevent any wild bird from using its nest.
Officers have recently received several reports from the public concerning tree felling and hedge trimming that have disturbed active bird nests.
A spokesperson said: “Before you reach for the hedge trimmers or start pruning those branches, please remember that our local wildlife is protected.
“Check first: Thoroughly inspect trees, hedges, and dense bushes for any signs of nesting before carrying out cutting, pruning, or clearing work.
-”Stop if necessary: If you discover an active nest, work must stop immediately. You must delay the work until the young have fully fledged and permanently left the nest.
“Please be mindful of your surroundings and let’s work together to protect Scotland’s wildlife this spring.”
