Students in Scotland’s capital might be reconsidering their nightlife habits as they feel the pinch from rising costs.

Edinburgh has been ranked as the third most expensive student city in the UK for a night out, with the median price of entry into a club the highest anywhere in the country.

Young students, cutting loose and enjoying newfound freedom, can expect to pay up to £52.13 for a night on the town.

This is according to cricket-themed sports bar chain Sixes, which ranked cities with at least one university on the price of three pints, club entry, two miles in a taxi, and food.

Edinburgh revellers face a median club entry fee of £12.50 – the highest in the UK.

For the price of three pints of Guinness, Edinburgh fares better, with its average rate of £18.75 ranking it outside the top five and far below London’s eye-watering £22.05 rate.

The University Night Out Price Index ranks 56 UK university zones, covering 110 institutions, by the true cost of a typical student night out.

The survey drew on data from 554 pubs, 481 paid club nights and 245 late-night restaurants across the country.

Each zone is scored from 0 to 100, with 100 marking the most expensive night out in the country.

London, with 23 university institutions, ranked at number one and scored 100 on the index.

The UK capital was followed by Cheltenham, home to the University of Gloucestershire, and then the Scottish capital – which frequently rivals London as one of the most expensive places to live in the UK.

In a statement online, Sixes said: “Every student knows the drill: pre-drinks, club entry, a couple of rounds at the bar, a 2 am food stop, and the taxi or bus fare home.

“The ‘standard’ student night out might look much the same wherever you study, but the price tag attached to it can vary hugely depending on your postcode.”

They added: “As living costs eat further into maintenance loans and part-time wages, we wanted to find out just how differently students’ budgets stretch depending on where they study.

“Edinburgh takes third place with a score of 62 out of 100, the highest-ranked university zone outside England.

“It has the most expensive clubs of any ranked UK zone, with a median entry price of £12.50, though its pints (three for £18.75) are cheaper than London and Cheltenham.”

Earlier this year, it emerged that Edinburgh was one of the most expensive cities in the world on Deutsche Bank’s “Oasis Index”, which measures the price of five beers and two packets of cigarettes.
