David Gray was delighted after his side picked up a vital three points at Ibrox last night.
Martin Boyle opened the scoring with his 110th goal for the Club, before Thelo Aasgaard levelled just before half-time.
Then on-loan striker Dane Scarlett, who chose the perfect time to score his first Hibs goal, finding a winner in the 89th minute to claim a 2-1 victory.
The result means Hibs move one point behind Motherwell, setting up a thrilling final day of the season where they host the Steelmen at Easter Road.
Speaking to Hibs TV after the game, Gray was delighted with the result and the character of his side.
“Because of everything we set out to do before we came here, we spoke about the need to win the game – that was all that mattered tonight.
“The performance level – we can look at that afterwards. There are areas where we know we need to be better. I thought Rangers were really good at times as well, and we relied heavily on our goalkeeper to make some massive saves in the game.
“But the players found a way to win. We were still in the game going into the last 15 minutes, and at that point we knew we had nothing to lose. We had to throw everything at it.
“We became more attacking, opened the game up, and even then, Rangers still had a couple of chances. But we found a couple of clinical moments, and that was the most important thing.
“When I analyse it, there are loads of things I can look at, but to be honest, it’s all about winning at this stage of the season. That’s what I spoke about before the game.”
Gray hailed the character and mentality of his players after picking up back-to-back away wins to keep Hibs chances of a fourth-place finish alive.
“To come here and do that, back-to-back wins now after a difficult period, the players deserve all the credit for that, and it sets things up nicely for the weekend,” he continued.
“As I said, we obviously scored an early goal again, but Sallinger made a huge save before that. I think I turned around at 1-0 up and thought we could have been 2-0 down at that stage. It was such a frantic start.
“Even the way we defended at times wasn’t where we’d been previously – we were a little bit off it, and when you are off it against good sides, they punish you.
“We relied on the goalkeeper, but the players stuck at it. They put their bodies on the line, and then you could feel it in the stadium and on the pitch – the players had belief. The mindset became: there’s nothing to lose here, we need to go after it.
“We knew we needed to win the game, and the players went after it right to the very end and got there in the end, which is the most important thing.
“It shows a lot about the character of the team. It’s easy to show good character when you win at places like this and people are saying nice things about you.
“Ibrox is a really difficult place to come. The pressure at Falkirk last weekend was huge as well because of the position we found ourselves in. The character of the boys and the togetherness through that difficult period – with the red cards and the other results going against us – really stood out.
“At that stage, it’s easy to let the season run away from you, but the players get what they deserve for what they put in every single day.
“It’s easy for me to say that after a result like this, but internally the belief has always been there. I’ve said all the time how highly I think of this group in terms of their togetherness, and it was there again tonight.
“It needs to be there right to the very end to give us the best chance of finishing fourth.
“It sets things up nicely for Saturday. Before the game, we knew we were relying on Motherwell dropping points, and thankfully, the results went our way tonight. But to take advantage of that, we had to win, and we’ve done that.
“The players will take a lot of confidence from tonight.”
