Students from the University of Edinburgh will face The University of Manchester in the grand final of the BBC’s University Challenge on Monday night.
The Edinburgh team, consisting of Parthav Easwar, Johnny Richards, Alice Leonard and Rayhana Amjad, are looking to bring home the title for just the second time ever.
They are up against stiff competition, however, in The University of Manchester, who are looking to match the record for most titles in history.
The Edinburgh team will go into the final on fine form, having won every single game so far in the season.
En route to the final, they defeated Darwin College in the semi-finals and Merton College in the quarter finals.
They have actually already defeated Manchester this season in the first round of the quarter finals
They last won the title in 2019, defeating St Edmund Hall, Oxford to claim the prize.
University Challenge is an annual quiz show which takes place over the course of months.
Contestants, who form teams which represent different universities around the country, are asked a series of difficult, specific questions about a range of topics.
The answers to the questions can be extremely obscure and require a deep and diverse education to be able to consistently answer correctly.
The show originally ran on ITV between 1962 and 1987, and was presented by quizmaster Bamber Gascoigne.
The programme was revived by the BBC in 1994, with Jeremy Paxman as its host. In 2023 journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan took over as host.
The show’s continual success has seen it become a staple of evening television in the UK.
The team is made up of Johnny Richards, from Los Angeles, who is completing his PhD in ancient DNA, Parthav Easwar from Portland, Oregon, who is studying for a Master’s in Sustainable land and Cities, team captain Alice Leonard, from Portsmouth, who is studying for a Master’s in Environment, Culture, and Society and Rayhana Amjad from Glasgow, who is studying for a PhD in Computer Science.
If they are defeated, Manchester will claim their fifth title ever, equalling the record held by Imperial College London,
The grand final will air at 8:30pm tonight on BBC Two.
