The Mathnasium Edinburgh South in Morningside is celebrating its first birthday.
The family-run maths learning centre is the first of its kind in Edinburgh, and supports pupils from Primary 1 up to school leavers. It is based in Morningside where a team of expert instructors creates personalised learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques to build maths knowledge level by level.
The business now has more than 70 local children who attend lessons, each receiving tailored instruction that meets their own needs.
There are also new online options, allowing the team to increase their reach and capacity to deliver the best outcomes while supporting parents who may find getting to the centre a challenge.
Centre Director Tara Mackintosh opened the maths learning centre in January 2025 as a new venture having worked with children throughout her career.
The family team also includes Tara’s parents Lesley and Scott Mackintosh who have decades of experience between them in senior business and finance roles.
Tara and team will mark the centre’s first birthday with a party for all students, parents and instructors, and with the launch of new Sunday sessions for students preparing for Nat 5 and IGCSE exams.
Tara Mackintosh, director of Mathnasium Edinburgh South, said: “I’m really delighted to be celebrating our first year here in Morningside – it’s been an amazing twelve months, and we’re so pleased to see the progress that our students have made. We assess every child before they start working with our instructors and then again at regular intervals, and on average students increase their mark by 38%. Seeing these young people improve not only their maths but also their confidence on a daily basis is what it’s all about.
“We’re now working in partnership with seven schools in the local area with pupils attending across our age ranges. Everything we do is focused on helping our students get the very most from their time in the centre – our investment into launching new Sunday sessions will mean the centre is open seven days a week and ensures we’re doing all we can to support students as they work towards these crucial exams.”
