Anglers keen on a pre-Christmas cast can look forward to the Big Arbroath X-Mas Cod Bash.

It is scheduled for Saturday, December 20 with fishing from 15.00 to 21.00 and registration is at the Victoria Park toilets in Arbroath from 13.30 and 14.00.

Entrants can travel to their favourite mark immediately after registering.

Organiser Allan Saunders (pictured) said entry is £15 for seniors and £5 for juniors and high tide is 14.18 with low tide at 20.30.

The weigh-in is at 21.00 to 22.00 and Saunders there is a two hook maximum with the minimum size of fish to the scales of 40cm.

All juniors must be accompanied by an adult and Saunders said: “Anglers are reminded that they are responsible for their own safety. Take care.”

There are prizes for the best dressed Santa plus the heavies cod and the first, second and third heaviest bags.

Meanwhile, Arbroath-based Stewart Falconer, a Scotland international and a regular in the Edinburgh Winter Shore League, tied with Ryan Harrison for the heaviest fish in the recent second Big Arbroath Open. They both landed one of 5lb 1oz and each pocketed £400 and beat a field of 90 other anglers on the day.

Second was Billy Buckley (Uddingston), another Scotland international, with a fish of 3lb 5oz and third Ian Hardy with one of 3lb 2oz.

Keith Bathgate won the heaviest bag with 10lb with Buckley second on 7lb 7oz and Steve Sherman third one ounce behind.

Results from the junior section of the Big Arbroath Open confirm that George Allardyce had the heaviest fish of 4lb 12oz. He also won the heaviest bag prize with one of 8lb with William Sterrock second on 3lb 11oz and Tomas Starka third on 2lb 10oz. Rocco Stevens was fourth with 1lb 6oz.

Elsewhere, Kirkcaldy-based Mike Horn leads the chase for the top prize in the heaviest cod league with one of 6lb 1oz caught in round two on Saturday when the sea was “on the big side”. There are three legs left.

Willie Kennedy won with a bag of 18lb 5oz with Kirkcaldy-based Alan Combe second on 17lb 7oz with Tony Cook third on 11lb 15oz and the next round is on Saturday, January 10. Fishing times are to be confirmed.
