Nuno Santos finished 18th in the 41st world shore angling championships in Portugal and the Glasgow-based fisherman was the highest ranked angler in the five-strong Scotland team.
The event was won by Dutch angler Frank Peene, the first fishermen to win the world championship title three times, and next best Scot was Billy Buckley (Uddingston) who was 31st.
Neil McMillan (Ayr) finished in 74th place with Barry McEwan (Port Seton) No 81 and Calum Culbert (Aberdeen) 93rd out of 114 competitors.
Portugal-born Santos (pictured), team manager of the Scotland junior team, said on social media: “It has been an honour to represent Scotland once again at the highest level of fishing.
“These last two weeks have flown in, fishing has been outstanding. The team fished hard but we have still fallen short of our goal.”
His personal goal was to finish in the top 20 and he added: “I am quite chuffed with it.”
Locally, Stevie Soutar won the opening round of the Edinburgh Winter Shore League with 15 fish on Portobello Beach. Graham Meadows was second on 11 fish and Ian Campbell third on ten fish.
The next round of the popular event, sponsored by Edinburgh Angling Centre, The Fishing Meagastore and Cox & Rawle, is on October 31 at Seafield.
