As part of the 900 Celebrations of when King David I created Edinburgh as a Royal Burgh, Oxgangs Neighbourhood Centre will be taking part by hosting an event on Sunday 29th June.

Explaining Dom Heslop, Manager of the Centre said: “The theme we are focusing on is ‘Celebrating the Contribution Oxgangs has made to our City’. There are many facets to our great capital city and their contribution to the history of Edinburgh can never be underestimated. Oxgangs is such an area, which plays its part in how our City has developed over nearly a thousand years. As Edinburgh expanded, it became imperative that farmland had to be utilised for housing. Therefore, Oxgangs moved from being a frontier community to, in the 1940s and 1950s, a major contributor to addressing the housing shortage that the City faced, and indeed still faces.’

‘This free event that the Centre will host for the community will take the shape of a street party with refreshments and I am delighted that former Lord Provost, Eric Milligan, will use his extensive knowledge of this area to speak, followed by the current Deputy Lord Provost Councillor Lezley Marion Cameron. After which, Gary Coupland, will entertain us. Let the party begin!’

Welcoming the event, Oxgangs Councillor and Chairman of the Centre,  Jason Rust said, “Hopefully there will be a big community turnout to enjoy the food and entertainment and celebrate the contribution of the Oxgangs and Firrhill area to our capital city.”
