A large investment in youth rugby is beginning to pay dividends for Leith Rugby Club. The club now has four players in particular from their development system making a mark on the representative scene.
They are Scott Robertson, Hamish Uttley, James Scott and Megan Shaw.
One of the most exciting talents to emerge is Megan, an S6 Leith Academy student who has been training all summer with the Leith women’s team and is expected to debut for them this season.
A proud Robbie Greenan, who coaches the Leith development squads along with Gavin Wright, said: “As well getting selected for the under-16 East region squad Megan is one of our Rugby Ambassadors helping at many sessions each week including Sunday tugby with our Leith Hawks group where she started playing in early primary school.
“(More recently) Megan was also a trialist for the under-18 Player Development Hub.
“Likewise Scott Robertson has been an Ambassador for two years as well as playing with the Edinburgh squad. Scott started rugby when he came to High School and stood out straight away with his tackling and carrying skills.
“Scott got through the Player Development Hub and into the Edinburgh squad at under-16 level last year and is now playing with the under-17s.
“Hamish Uttley started rugby at Leith Hawks in P5 always scoring tries and making big carries and tackles.
“Progressing to the under-16s Hamish was part of a team which made the semi-final of the East Region Shield losing out to Kelso HS on ‘first try scored’.”
That helped Hamish into the under-16 Edinburgh squad with whom he trains twice a week.
James Scott made it through to the wider Edinburgh squad.
