A protest staged at the Russian Consulate on Melville Street ended when two Russian speakers who arrived in a black van with diplomatic registration plates, removed all Ukrainian signs there, according to an eye witness.

The man and woman claimed only to speak Russian when asked but refused to answer any questions about their actions posed to them in Russian. The woman appeared to push a Ukrainian who challenged them, leading to those present claiming that they were backed by the consulate.

Protesters protested their views on the two year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Consulate has been closed in Edinburgh for most of the two years, but during the protest the front door opened briefly, although no-one came out.

Separately journalism student Lauren Cameron, who was present said: “With today marking the two year anniversary of the outbreak of war in Ukraine, it was incredible to see so many people coming together in support and solidarity.

“Hearing first-hand from those affected by the war, as well as those with families still in Ukraine, was a powerful reminder of the realities some are facing.

“Today’s protest shows how many in Edinburgh continue to stand with Ukraine.”
