The Royal High School Preservation Trust is looking for a new Chair after the departure of former chair and founding trustee, William Gray Muir.

The trust is also looking for new trustees to take forward the plans to convert the former school building on Regent Road into a National Centre for Music. This is the latest iteration in proposals which have ranged from a Rosewood Hotel to a new home for St Mary’s Music School.

The planning journey has been tortuous but the settled future of the building which has lain empty for more than half a century will involve conversion of the listed building. The existing trustees say they are looking for people who have some expertise in capital building project delivery, construction management, finance and audit, risk management, trading and retail and PR and communications.

The funding will largely be supported by a £45 million grant from the Dunard Fund and plans include improvements to the space around the building making it available to the public.

Grant Mackenzie, executive director of the Royal High School Preservation Trust said: “We are looking for engaged and enthusiastic individuals to drive and deliver the project working closely with our board and operations team. We’d love to hear from anyone who has experience, knowledge and strong leadership skills and believe they are a good fit for the project. We’re also really keen to hear from anyone who has a genuine passion for the project and feels like they have something to add.

“The restoration of the Royal High School and the creation of the National Centre for Music is an internationally significant cultural project and will open up and secure the future of one of Edinburgh’s most important heritage sites. It will be an exciting and rewarding campaign to be part of and we’d urge anyone with a passion for music or built heritage to get in touch.”

Applications for the roles close on Monday 22 January at 12noon with interviews taking place in February 2024. These are non-remunerated roles. Applications and further information can be found here
