It is some considerable time since the bridge on the approach to Cramond Brig was closed to vehicles and then demolished in November 2017.

The council had decided it was unsafe and that the only option was to tear it down.

Now they are about to spend almost £3 million on constructing the replacement Burnshot Bridge and will appoint Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Limited to erect it. The whole project is budgeted at just over £4.5 million.

Local councillor for the Almond Ward Norman Work said : “I am delighted that at last this is going to committee for approval and I hope that there are no further delays in getting the bridge built and fully operational. It is an important route for residents who have been affected by the closure.”

A visual of what the new bridge will look like

The original bridge was built in 1964 when the Forth Road Bridge and connecting roads were constructed. The form of construction was favoured at the time but has since been found susceptible to corrosion. The old bridge deck contained a single span suspended on ‘half-joints’ which is no longer permitted.

The new bridge has been designed by engineering consultants Mott Macdonald Limited. The new bridge will be a single span concrete structure with two way vehicular traffic and also space for active travel. SPOKES and Sustrans have been consulted over that part of the design.

The approval of the contract is on the agenda for the Finance & Resources Committee which will meet on 7 March 2019. You can read all the council papers here.
