Division One: Edinburgh University 2, Watsonians 2 (at Peffermill)
Watsonians were denied their first win since returning to the top flight of Scottish hockey by a last-minute strike by Edinburgh University following a penalty corner.
Earlier, the new-look university combine dominated the first-half at Peffermill and David Mawhinney netted seven minutes from the break.
Watsonians then hit the students with back-to-back goals and the newly-promoted combine held the scoreline until late-on.
One of their squad was yellow carded and Edinburgh’s coach Graham Moodie withdrew his goalkeeper.
That gave the students a nine to 11 outfield advantage and they forced a corner from which Matthew Taylor netted to level.
David Reid, Edinburgh’s assistant coach, said that the students forced seven corners to Watsonians one.
He said: “We had a lot of pressure and also had a lot of chances but we have a young, inexperienced side.
“Yes we are disappointed but we have to be realistic in that these guys have a lot to learn.”
