Bags of rubbish collected by the volunteers on Calton Hill

Crew from the McDonald’s restaurants on Princes Street, South St Andrew Street and at Waverley Market in Edinburgh have spruced-up Calton Hill and the surrounding park.

The 25 volunteers collected seven bags of litter and repaired ten park benches, both sanding and repainting them.

They teamed up with J & M Construction, who provided them with the sanding sheets and paint, PC Derek Barbour from the Edinburgh City Centre Policing Team and attendees from various local football clubs including Golden Gray Soccer Academy and Leith Athletic.

This event one of a number of McDonald’s clean-ups which have taken place across Scotland as part of its on-going support of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Clean Up Scotland campaign which is now in its 11th year.

Martin Lomax, McDonald’s area manager said: “Calton Hill is a key priority of ours to ensure that the local area remains free of litter and an enjoyable place to live, work and visit.

McDonald’s patrol the streets at least three times a day to collect all litter that has been discarded, regardless of its origin.

Crew members across the UK cover a total of 3,000 miles each week on litter patrols which equates to 150,000 miles a year.

Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Through our Clean up Scotland campaign we support thousands of people each year to improve the places they care about by removing litter.”
