Police are appealing for witnesses following a suspicious incident which took place around 2.10 a.m. this morning at the Central Mosque in Potterrow.
An object was thrown at the building, which caused minor fire damage to the door and a small bush within the garden area.
Inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible and anyone with information is asked to come forward.
Detective Inspector John Kavanagh said: “Fortunately no one was injured as a result of this incident, but the consequences could have been far worse had the fire taken hold and spread.
“I would ask that anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity around the Mosque, or within the Potterrow area, contacts police immediately.
Chief Inspector Mark Rennie, Local Area Commander for South East Edinburgh said: “This was a despicable and reckless act, which we are treating as a hate crime.
“We have launched a thorough investigation to identify anyone involved and anyone who believes they have information that can assist with our inquiries is urged to get in touch.”

I am so glad the Police are treating this as a ‘ hate crime ‘ , I’d hate for them to treat this as a ‘ love crime ‘.
Fire bombs !? …that is pretty extreme for Edinburgh ! …Edinburgh is a tolerant and multicultural city we don’t need that kind of carry on …even if all the media directed at us on tv, newspapers and radio tells us Islam is bad, that is no excuse to act on the media excitations.
