Last night was the first night of a seven night golden glow in St Andrew Square, and several buildings around the city also lit up gold. And it is all for a good cause.

Glow Gold in September was started byĀ a group of parents of childrenĀ with cancer, many of whom have already lost their child to the disease. In our newspaper and also here we told you the story of Kai and his mum Pam Neilson who is one of the people behind the campaign.

TheĀ childhood cancer awareness campaign hasĀ the backing and support of many well known charities nationally and locally including Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Fund, Clic Sargent, CCLG and CCLASP.

Young entrants to Edinburghā€™s Green Pencil Award were immersed in their subject matter at the launch of the annual writing competitionĀ yesterday.

Preston Street Primary School pupils explored the competitionā€™s theme, Scotlandā€™s Glorious Gardens, with a visit to the capitalā€™s famous Princes Street Gardens.

They were also joined by childrenā€™s author Vivien French, whose books include Oliverā€™s Vegetables and the Tiara Club series, for a special writing workshop.

Children, who must be p4 to p7, can write a poem or story, which could focus on anything from a memorable visit to a Scottish garden like the Royal Botanic Gardens or a creative depiction of what the ideal Scottish garden would look and smell like.

Culture Convener, Councillor Richard Lewis, said: ā€œThis is a popular and engaging competition for budding writers across the city, and always produces many creative and compelling entries from young people.

ā€œThis yearā€™s theme should also inspire more visits to our fantastic range of parks and greenspaces so I look forward to reading the creative writing to result from it. Good luck to all those involved.ā€

Entries to the Green Pencil Award, which should be no longer than one side of A4, can be made on theĀ Council website, and can also be handed in to your local library.

Children are being encouraged to take inspiration from a dedicated nature and garden-related reading list, which can be found on Edinburghā€™s library catalogue website.

The closing date is Friday, 14 October, with an awards ceremony to be held at the Central Library in late November.

The Balmoral Hotel Edinburgh Tartan - Designed by Kinloch Anderson - Calton Hill

The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel, has unveiled a new tartan uniform, bringing a lighter, contemporary design to the hotelā€™s door staff, concierge and front of house team.

The hotel worked with Kinloch Anderson, Tailors and Kiltmakers to The Royal Family, for over 18 months to create the new design which wasĀ inspired by the natural landscape of Edinburgh and Scotland.

Yarn colours in heather, moss, thicket, zest, greenfinch and rave were selected in a light tweed. The colours reflect the stunning views of Arthurā€™s Seat, the Old Town and Princes Street Gardens which can be seen from The Balmoral.

The new tartan, called ā€˜The Balmoral Hotel Edinburgh Tartanā€™, was officially registered in the Scottish Register of Tartans today and will showcase a modern tartan design to the thousands of guests who visit the hotel for many years to come.

Hamilton & Inches have celebrated a landmark birthday this year with the installation of the Rook on George Street and a royal visit.
