A burst water main in Edinburgh has caused flooding and the closure of a busy road in the east of the city.
Residents in multiple postcodes in the area have faced issues with their water supply in the aftermath while images from the scene showed a pool of water covering a section of the street.
Scottish Water closed off the street between The Jewel and Mountcastle Drive on Thursday morning while engineers worked to excavate the main and repair the burst.
Lothian Buses were forced to divert Services 21, 106, X6, X5, X7 and X4 from the area, while motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The burst 18-inch water main is affecting customers in Edinburgh, Danderhall, Castle Green, St Martins, Piershill, Woolmet, Gracemount, Grangepark, St Leonards, Dumbiedykes, Newcraighall, Moredun, The Inch and surrounding areas.
Repair crews have begun isolating the burst main to allow repairs to be carried out safely, while customers have been warned they may continue to experience low or intermittent water pressure while repairs progress.
Scottish Water say they are working closely with schools and hospitals in the affected area to understand any impacts and provide support where required.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said:
“Our teams are working as quickly and safely as possible to repair this burst water main and fully restore normal service to all affected customers.
“We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while these essential repairs are carried out and apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused.”
