Voters are being encouraged to check they are on the electoral roll with just four weeks until the Scottish Parliament Election.

As campaigns get underway and interest in the forthcoming vote begins to mount, residents are being reminded that they must be registered in order to have their say on 5 May.

This is the first time 16 and 17-year-olds will be able to vote in an election, other than the Scottish Independence Referendum, following the passing of the Scottish Elections (Reduction of Voting Age) Bill last year.

Members of the public, including students and people who have moved home since the last time they registered, should check they are on the electoral roll ahead of the registration deadline on 18 April.

Nominations for Holyrood candidates closed on Friday, 1 April. The full list of candidates and parties standing in Edinburgh’s six constituencies and the Lothian region is available on the Council website.

Andrew Kerr, Chief Executive of the City of Edinburgh Council and Returning Officer for Edinburgh and Regional Returning Officer for the Lothian Region, said: “The last few years have seen real enthusiasm from residents taking part in the democratic process, and we hope to see this continue for the Scottish Election.

“This is a significant election in that it will see a whole new group of voters have their say, with 16 and 17-year-olds able to participate for the first time. Anyone unsure about how to register, where to vote or how to vote by post can find more information on the Council website.”

More than 84% of the city’s residents voted in the Scottish Independence Referendum in September 2014, which also saw a record-breaking turnout across the country. At the UK Parliamentary Election in May 2015 turnout in the capital stayed high, at an average of 73% across Edinburgh’s five constituencies.

Edinburgh Leisure is looking for swim teachers who can turn people into fish.

There’s something magical about a good swim teacher. A person who can take ordinary men, women, children and people with special needs . . . and transform them into swimmers.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Leisure said: “We’re always on the lookout for more of these ‘Very Important People’ – swim teachers who are passionate about their cause, who view swimming as an essential life skill and who hold a minimum UKCC Level 1 qualification and have the potential to work towards UKCC Level 2.

“Our Aquatics and Learn to Swim teams are friendly and approachable and know how to make learning to swim fun. They’re looking for like-minded individuals to join them. Apart from fun and fulfilment, there’ll be the opportunity to work with Scottish Swimming’s Service Provider of the Year 2014. Edinburgh Leisure also offers one of the best rewards packages in the business, with generous pension, and holidays and free membership to all our of our centres. All of which makes this job something of a catch.”
