David Mach, the Fife-born artist behind the Big Heids (sculptures on the M8)and the Precious Light exhibition at the City Art Centre in 2013, is to present the Edinburgh Lecture at the end of March.
Lord Provost Donald Wilson, said: “David Mach’s contribution promises to be as colourful, creative and thought-provoking as his art. He is one of Scotland’s most successful artists and is very close to Edinburgh, having exhibited Precious Light(external link) at the City Art Centre in 2013.
“The City is proud to own three of his artworks, including his very striking portrait of the Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. This lecture will be a rare opportunity to hear the thought process behind his creations.”
The artist who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1988 was elected Royal Academician in 1998 and now lives and works in London.
He commented: “I work in so many different ways with so different materials using so many different processes in order to feed the need of my themes-excess, extravagance, individuality, survival. I want blood and guts in my work… jealousy, rape, mayhem, pestilence, famine and flood. Love, peace, hope, sex and lust!”
Previous speakers have included Sir Jackie Stewart, Mikail Gorbachev and HRH The Princess Royal. This year there will be one lecture in place of a series.
Mach will speak on the topic : The art of excess and tickets are on sale now.
