Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault which  happened shortly after 3.30am on Sunday morning  in Ferry Road Drive.

A 34-year-old woman exited a car in the area to speak with a friend at which time she became involved in an altercation with a male and female.

The male then pushed and struck the victim to the face and a 40-year-old man then also exited the car to intervene.

At this time the suspect repeatedly punched and kicked the man to the head and body before he and the female left the area.

Officers then responded along with the Scottish Ambulance Service and it was established the male victim had sustained a serious injury to his jaw.

The female victim suffered minor injury to her face.

Anyone who can assist police in tracing the suspect is asked to come forward.

He is described as white, mid-twenties, 5ft 8ins tall with a medium athletic build, light-coloured shaven hair and wearing white trainers and a dark tracksuit with light piping down the arms, legs and across the back.

Detective Constable Iain Wallace from the Violence Reduction Unit at Gayfield Police Station said: “During this attack the male victim suffered a painful injury to his jaw, which will require further treatment and the female victim was also left injured and distressed.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who can help us identify the man responsible and would ask anyone who recognises his description to contact police immediately.

“In addition, members of the public with any further information relevant to this inquiry should also get in touch.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
