Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery at a city centre exchange bureau which happened around 9.30am today  at the No. 1 Currency store on the High Street.

A 59-year-old woman was working alone within the premises when a male entered and began swinging a metal pole at the glass kiosk booth in an attempt to gain access.

However, his attempt was unsuccessful and he made off from the shop empty-handed, heading towards the Cowgate.

Officers are now asking anyone who can help them identify the suspect to come forward.

He is described as white, between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 8ins tall with a slim build, and dark eyebrows. He was wearing a black waterproof jacket with white zips and the hood drawn tightly around his face, slim-fitting black jeans or trousers and light-coloured trainers.

Detective Sergeant Lynsey Thomson said: “We believe this male was trying to break through the glass in an attempt to then steal money from the store, but thankfully he was unsuccessful.

“The High Street would have undoubtedly been very busy at the time of the incident and I would ask anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in this area, or around the Cowgate, to contact police immediately.

“I would also urge anyone who recognises the description of the suspect to also get in touch and assist with our inquiries.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
