TER 2014_01_04 Thistle Street Fire - 15

Two firefighters are in hospital following a road collision in East Lothian.

Last night a fire appliance from Haddington fire station responded to a report of a road traffic collision on the A198 between Ballencrieff and Longniddry in East Lothian at 9.50pm.

Whilst responding Edinburgh Operations Control received a message that the fire appliance was involved in a road traffic collision (no other vehicles involved) resulting in it leaving the road. Appliances from North Berwick, Musselburgh were mobilised to the incident and used hydraulic rescue equipment to free the crew.

Six crew members were released from the fire appliance with injuries and the crew were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.  Four firefighters have subsequently been released and two remain in hospital with crash type injuries.

John Dickie, Local Senior Officer for the area said: “Our thoughts and best wishes are with our personnel who were injured in last night’s road traffic collision. All six were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following the incident, four were subsequently released following treatment and two remain in hospital. We wish them all a speedy recovery. Welfare support has been put in place for all crew members and their families. Alternative fire cover arrangements have also been instigated for Haddington whilst affected personnel are off duty.”

The cause of the accident is unknown and police Scotland are currently carrying out an investigation.
