“A spectacular and safe event” – the verdict of Edinburgh’s senior police officers after tens of thousands of revellers welcomed in the New Year at the city centre’s Hogmanay festivities.

Police worked closely with the City of Edinburgh Council and Unique Events to plan for the party in Prince’s Street Gardens, whilst also ensuring officers were on hand to provide reassurance and deal with any disorder at celebrations across the capital.

Chief Superintendent Mark Williams, Edinburgh Policing Commander, said: “Edinburgh has once again set the standard for a spectacular start to the New Year. It’s been a fantastic night and the vast majority of people have enjoyed themselves responsibly.

“There were only 3 arrests at the street party and those were for minor public order offences such a breach of the peace.

“Police officers remain on duty in the city centre as I am sure the celebrations will continue for some time yet. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very safe and peaceful 2015.”
