The Festivals of Museums will take place from 16-18 May 2014 and will feature over 80 events in museums across Scotland including a 1940s tea party, Rock and Roll swing dance and a World War 1 inspired performance by a soprano, tenor and pianist at the Scottish National Gallery
The organisers are sure that there will be something for everyone at this year’s Festival of Museums whether you’re a family looking for an educational fun day out to entertain the kids; a couple looking to do something a bit out of the ordinary; or keen to fly solo and enjoy some culture on your doorstep, the Festival of Museums has it all on offer!
Many events in Edinburgh and The Lothians have a 1940s theme, from a chance to improve your painting and drawing skills using a 1940s technique at Edinburgh College of Art, learning about medical advances, to a family style 1940s tea party at St Cecilia’s Hall Museum of Instruments at the University of Edinburgh. Visitors can also learn about the birth of Rock & Roll and swing dance at the University, while there will also be an opportunity to learn about fossils at the Almond Valley Heritage Trust.
Those with a love of the outdoors can learn about John Muir’s love of wildlife at the Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum in East Lothian, while a special collaboration will also take place between the National Galleries of Scotland and the Edinburgh International Festival which will include a performance by a soprano, tenor and pianist of Western classical music depicting the conflict of the First World War in the magnificent setting of the Scottish National Gallery.
