Education Children & Families Committee meets today – Wifi in the Library! – Corstorphine at Christmas – Calling all blood donors – Speakeasy at the Storytelling Centre

The council’s Education committee convenes today under the convenership of Councillor Paul Godzik. The full papers are here and these include a comprehensive report on the improvements being planned for Castlebrae Community High School which the council decided to keep open earlier this year.

A troubleshooting head teacher has been parachuted in to lead the way forward from a decreasing school roll which stood at 130 in June 2013 towards the new school planned for Craigmillar in 2020. Part of the plan is to increase communication from the school to change the mistaken perception that it is failing the children who attend it. One of the ways that the school communicates is through Twitter. You can find out what they are up to here but this is one of their latest tweets….

Library users will be able to browse the web and download e-books to their own mobile devices for free as part of a wi-fi roll-out across all of Edinburgh’s libraries.

Wireless internet has been installed in the capital’s 28 public libraries, meaning visitors can bring laptops, smartphones and tablets to use the services on offer.

Free wi-fi will make internet access easier for members of the public, who can now choose between using library computers and their own devices.

As well as browsing the web from the comfort of their local library hub, members can use wi-fi to connect to a wide selection of online library services including language learning and driving theory test practise, or download an ebook to read or listen to on their smartphone or tablet.

Each month around 8500 e-books and e-magazines are downloaded from Edinburgh City Libraries’ increasingly popular selection of titles.

Councillor Richard Lewis, the city’s Culture and Sport Convener, said:- “Our libraries play a vital role in communities across the city and we are committed to taking the service forward into the 21st Century. With over 3 million visitors to our libraries last year, the service is going from strength to strength and by offering free wi-fi we are adapting to user demand but also improving access to the extensive catalogue of services on offer.”
