The latest state-of-the-art care home commissioned by The City of Edinburgh Council is to be called Drumbrae House.

The new 60 bed care home is being built off Ardshiel Avenue and is due to open in spring. It will replace two of the Council’s older care homes – Clermiston House and The Tower.

Staff and residents of those two care homes, along with their relatives and members of the local community, voted from a list of four potential names with Drumbrae House being the clear winner.

This is the fifth new care home to be built by The City of Edinburgh Council as part of its strategy for providing a high quality care environment for older people.

GRAHAM Construction, who are building the care home, donated £50 worth of M & S vouchers as part of the naming competition to each of the two lucky entrants.

Convener of Health, Social Care & Housing – Ricky Henderson

Councillor Ricky Henderson, Convener for Health and Wellbeing at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “The name fits in perfectly with the history of the area and I’m sure that the local community will give a warm welcome to residents and staff.

“This new care home will give residents the opportunity to stay in accommodation which is more suitable to their needs and gives them a better standard of living.

“As part of our Live Well in Later Life strategy we are committed to offering high quality residential care for older people in the city.”

James Henderson, Drumbrae House Project Manager GRAHAM Construction, said: ““Working on the Drumbrae Care home project has been a real pleasure and I hope the new residents enjoy the facility as much as we have during its construction.

“The local community have been very welcoming during the build and I have spoken to many whilst they have been passing by the site as the work progressed. I know the design of the care home will make the residents feel part of this community with its many large glazed areas and viewing points giving it a real sense of the outside space.“

The new home will be sub-divided into four wings of 15 bedrooms, each with their own sitting and dining areas.  Bedrooms will all have en-suite shower rooms and assisted bathrooms.

The four wings are arranged around a central courtyard and accessible garden allowing the more vulnerable residents freedom within a secure environment.

All the Council’s new care homes have been designed to a high specification and include activity rooms, hairdressing rooms and support facilities.

The new care home is part of Edinburgh’s Live Well in Later Life strategy, which aims to provide a wide range of quality care and support, to meet older people’s needs both in their own homes and in carefully designed ones.

The new care home will be beneficial in providing a caring and supportive service for older people so they can enjoy a better quality of life.

It also marks the phased replacement of older style Council care homes which now need to be upgraded to provide a more suitable care environment.
