Edinburgh band release their latest single Learn to Cry

Since winning the Scottish heat of Hard Rock Rising back in March The Asps have been working and gigging pretty much non-stop from playing 3 gigs in 1 day at BT London Live in Hyde Park and Victoria Park during the Olympics to playing in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle in Princes Street Gardens in the height of the Edinburgh International Festival they have released their latest single.

Learn To Cry is opened by Michael Barry’s catchy keyboard playing then joined by Chris Simpson’s guitar , Paul Dourley’s vocal’s follow singing “Let’s Build a House a place where we can grow a place where we can trust” Paul’s vocals are very distinct, very fragile and pleading as he gets the message of the opening lines across. It works very well as Craig Renwick’s bass, Lewis Hutchison’s drums and Graeme Renwick’s saxophone build the song’s tempo up. It all fuses together brilliantly and expertly to form a sound that has The Asps looking like a band who have been around for many years. The truth is actually the opposite, since they have only been together around 18 months or so. This song has a very high maturity level to it considering the short time the band has been together.

Paul Dourley said this about the song:- “Basically the song is about the animal instinct to scream, when a baby first comes out, it’s not crying , it’s screaming for the comfort of the womb, the safe place we all crave when we get older. We learn to cry as we get older because we realise that it get us things, also the other side of the coin is that the adult in society does forget how to scream with all the societal restrictions placed on them. We become disgraced when we build up hatred, simply because we have forgotten how to express our own emotions.”

All in all a great song and undoubtedly many more to follow.

The Asps will be playing The Ross Bandstand as part of Fantasia Scotland this Thursday 23 August 2012 at 1.30pm
