A Clockwork Orange with a 21st Century Spin is being staged at Telford College on Friday night.

50 years after the novel A Clockwork Orange was first written students at Edinburgh’s Telford College are set to reinvent Anthony Burgess’ world famous classic by using female students in the leading roles.

Performed by students from The Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) – a performing arts centre founded by Edinburgh’s Telford College – the play will be performed as a part of the Edinburgh College’s Festival.

Scott Johnston, the Programme Area Leader at PASS said: “We are delighted to be performing at this year’s Edinburgh College’s Festival and the performers here at PASS have been working hard for months in preparation.

“As the play is so well known it was particularly challenge for the students and the fact that we are re-defining the central roles by using female rather than male students the pressure they are feeling was further increased.

“Most of the student’s performing in ‘A Clockwork Orange’ hail from Edinburgh originally, so it will be a good demonstration of local talent. We hope to do Anthony Burgess and film director Stanley Kubrick proud!”

Written in 1987 A Clockwork Orange is set in a futuristic city, which turns a blind eye to the rampant violent youth culture running riot. The plot follows the highs and lows of Alex who is the leader of a small gang of teenage criminals.

The play’s theme’s deal with free-will, the evil of government and reality amongst others and tackles sensitive and often violent issues, which are present across all societies. Such was the violence of these issues, that the book was banned in America and the infamous Stanley Kubrick film was the subject of much controversy.

Students will perform A Clockwork Orange at the PASS theatre at Edinburgh’s Telford College on West Granton Road on 8th June at 7pm tickets priced at £8/£5 concessions.

Last year’s festival, the first of its kind organised by Edinburgh’s Telford College, won the college a prestigious marketing prize, and this year it is set is set to be even bigger and better as it is developed in conjunction with Jewel and Esk and Stevenson College.

It is expected that the Festival will impact on 35000 students across Edinburgh, with events taking place across 22 city-centre venues. Festival-goers will be able to make the most of special offers from the colleges’ restaurants and spas.

Lyndsey Dougan, Events and Communications Coordinator at Telford, said: “After the success of last year’s Festival, we are delighted that our merger partners Jewel & Esk College and Stevenson College Edinburgh are on board to help us deliver the 2012 festivities which has the potential to be the largest student-led event in the UK.”

Edinburgh’s Telford College, provides a wide range of career related programmes to help learners progress into work or University education. Currently the college has around 17,000 students and 600 members of staff.
