Inverleith’s opening match of Day 2 was third on the programme against Slagelse HC from Denmark. The Danish side had lost one match and drawn the other on Day 1, but still looked like a good side. It took the local team eight minutes to open the scoring with a solo effort from Derek Salmond. Inverleith ‘scored’ two more goals in the half, one before and one after their ‘allowed’ goal, but both were disallowed by the umpiring team. So with no further scoring, the half ended with Inverleith one goal to the good. Great things must have been said at the break as Inverleith were on the attack from the break. It still took them nearly four minutes to score their second, but soon after the Danes opened their account from the penalty spot. A few minutes further in, Inverleith were awarded a penalty corner which was stopped illegally on the line by a defender. With him duly despatched to the sin-bin, Chris Duncan scored with the flick from the spot. Another two goals followed swiftly, but late on, with Inverleith reduced to five, the Danish side scored their second from a corner to finish the match 5-2 to the Scots.
The match was particularly notable for the number of cards of various colours awarded, which was bordering on more than in all the other matches put together.
Inverleith’s second match was against HC 1972 Rakovnik, who had beaten the ‘home’ sides earlier opponents 8-6 on Day 1, so a good match up seemed to be on the cards. It wan’t to be however. Inverleith ran out winners 10-3, with four of their goals from penalty corners. The Czech side just couldn’t get going and in the end were driven into the ground by the rampant Edinburgh team.
