Police will be carrying out extra patrols in communities across Midlothian this weekend, following the murder of Dale Bennett last Saturday (February 12).

Extra officers will be brought in to carry out high-visibility patrols in Gorebridge, Mayfield and Dalkeith, in order to identify potential witnesses, and to provide reassurance to local residents.

Dale, (17), from Mayfield, died in an incident that happened in the early hours of Saturday morning in Newbyres Road, Gorebridge. A 20-year-old man has appeared at court, charged with his murder.

As part of this weekend’s activity, officers will be present at the scene of the incident on Friday night into Saturday morning, in a bid to identify potential witnesses who may have been in the area around the time of Dale’s death.

Inspector Mike Bennett, from Lothian and Borders Police, said: “We will be mounting extra high-visibility patrols in the area on Friday and Saturday night, and officers will revisit the scene of Dale’s death in a bid to identify any potential witnesses who may have been in the area last weekend.

“In addition to this, our aim is to provide reassurance to local residents who may have concerns, and to help ease any tensions that exist within the local community.

“We remain keen to speak to anyone who has information about Dale’s death who has not yet been in touch with police, and we would urge them to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.”
