We have just discovered the wonderful Panamint website where you can buy really old films about Edinburgh on DVD, and some of them are even in Blu-Ray format.

There are a few films about Edinburgh including one called Remembering Edinburgh’s Cinemas, narrated by one Neil Connery (shurely not?) The DVD includes: Curtain Up the history of the Playhouse from 1929 to 2004, including a film of Laurel and Hardy’s visit to Edinburgh in 1932; Edinburgh’s Silver Screens a revised version of the video release; and Matinee Memories a trip down memory lane for those who remember the Saturday matinee, based on an exhibition in the Museum of Childhood.

One of our iconic windy corners in the city is the Waverley Steps beside The Balmoral Hotel. And would you believe there is a film named after the steps themselves? Waverley Steps, John Eldridge’s classic view of Edinburgh in 1948 produced for the first Edinburgh International Film Festival, makes its DVD debut. Centered around a day in the life of a railway fireman and other residents of Edinburgh. Recorded using location sound it offers a fly-on-the-wall view of Edinburgh life in a more leisurely era long gone. One of the classic documentaries. You can see a clip from the film here on The Scottish Screen Archive pages….

You can buy these on the Panamint website and if you spend over £20 by 9 January you will get a discount!
