Edinburgh’s Grassmarket is set to become a giant play area tomorrow. As part ofnational ‘Playday’, children will be able to get involved in a range of activities up and down the popular area. The event has been organised as part of The City of Edinburgh Council’s play strategy to highlight the benefits of imaginative play to parents and communities.
City Children & Families Leader, Cllr Marilyne MacLaren, said:
“Play is an important part of any child’s development and Playday provides fantastic opportunity to celebrate and promote its many benefits. The more creative we are about encouraging children to play, the bigger the positive impact on a child’s health and development.
“We want to show, through our strategy, that play doesn’t rely on expensive toys or on having a back garden – it’s all about helping kids to use their imagination and not wrapping them up in cotton wool.”
The Council is using the event to highlight the importance of making time to play for all children. On offer will be sand and water play, wheeled toys, creative construction, active play, a chill out zone and storytelling.
