Labour has welcomed the fact that Scottish viewers will be able to watch the prime ministerial debates after the SNP court action was comprehenively rejected by the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

David McLetchie MSP, British General Election campaign manager, says:
“The SNP knew the UK leaders’ debates would get significant press coverage but Alex Salmond waited till now to go to court to ensure maximum coverage during the campaign. His use of the legal process, for what has been no more than a £50,000 SNP campaign stunt, is desperate stuff. The ruling just proves this point.
“Alex Salmond knows no-one is paying any interest to the SNP’s campaign because this is a British General Election, he is not even standing and the Scottish public are not taking the SNP seriously.
“As the UK economy struggles to get through the recession, as Labour’s debt legacy continues to grow, as youth unemployment hits new highs, as businesses fight to survive, as our soldiers are sent into battle without the right equipment, as fuel prices continue to go up, as our health service faces new challenges, as people tighten their belts to pay the bills, what is the SNP’s top priority?
