Jacob Fearnley won more games against Kiaran Jacquet of France in the quarter final of the Bahrain Challenger tennis tournament, and the players shared an equal number of points – 92 apiece.
But that will be no comfort to the Edinburgh professional who is bound to be suffering intense frustration after going down 6-7, 6-1. 3-6.
Frustration? Fearnley led 5-2 in the first set and twice failed to serve out successfully, going behind in a tie-break.
It looked as if he might have dug himself out of a hole when running away with the second set but as Jacquet continued to benefit from outstanding retrieving from the corners of the court it looked as if the world No 126 simply wanted the victory more, picking up a code violation at one point for “ball abuse”.
In the end it was a tame surrender with the match finishing on one of Fearnley’s many unforced errors while he had twice as many double faults – six to three – as his opponent.
