Marink Reedijk’s first home game ended in a 2-1 defeat to Falkirk that left Hibs at the bottom of the table.

The result means that Hibs have now gone six Premiership matches without a victory in front of their own fans the last being on 4 April against Kilmarnock.

Reedijk made three changes from the side that lost away to Dundee United last week: wing-back Adam Mayor, midfielder Azeem Abdulai and forward Martin Boyle replaced Jack Iredale, the injured Callum Wright and Ante Suto respectively.

In addition, he made Felix Passlack skipper instead of Boyle who normally has the role in the absence of club captain Joe Newell.

The stadium was quieter than normal due to the ban issued to members of Block Seven.

Hibs started on the front foot and Owen Elding was booked in the 5th minute for a mistimes challenge.

Hibs almost took the lead from a cleverly worked corner. Passlack dummied to allow Josh Mulligan to shoot but the ball was deflected into the path of Thiebault Klidje who curled his effort just past the far post.

But it was the visitors who took the lead when Azeem  Abdulai lost possession in midfield and the ball was played into the path of American striker Jacob Murrell who fired home for his third goal of the season.

Seconds later, Owen Eamesalmost added a second but Raphael Sallinger was alert to the danger and saved with his legs.

On the half hour mark Boyle had a great chance to equalise, but Scott Bain saved his effort.

But moments later Falkirk doubled their advantage when a backheel deep in his own half from striker Klidje gifts possession to the Bairns and the ball went to Murrell who found the roof of the net from an acute angle.

Hibs fought back immediately and Elding knocked in a fine cross from Passlack. Celebrations were delayed due to a VAR check for handball but the goal stood.

Just before the break Falkirk thought they had added a third from a corner but goalscorer Finley Barbrook was in an offside position to the relief of the home fans.

After the restart Hibs were awarded a penalty when Lewis Neilson was adjudged to brought down Klidje. A VAR check however showed the foul took place just outside the box and Boyle fired the resultant free-kick over the bar.

On the hour mark Jamie McGrath and Rabbi Matondo replaced Klidje and Abdulai.

McGrath looked lively and was twice denied by Bain as Hibs tried desperately to level the score but it was not to be and the Bairns held on for the three points.

The final whistle was greeted with a chorus of boos from the disgruntled supporters.

Reedijk told BBC Scotland: “The summary is individual mistakes. They scored two goals from our individual mistakes.

“We scored a good goal ourselves and had moments to score again but didn’t. The game changes if you do so because then Easter Road is behind us, but this didn’t happen.

“What I have seen today is a step forward compared to Dundee [United]. That sounds strange, but that is really what I think.

“We took control of the whole match and had some good opportunities, but then we have to score these.

“Yet we keep on stepping forward, we keep on showing that we are brave.”

As for being at the bottom of the table, he adds: “It’s something I don’t want. I also think that, based on the match today, we don’t deserve it.

“I’m therefore positive but with a sick feeling in my stomach.”
