A new independent cheese store has opened its doors to customers on Edinburgh’s Broughton Street, bringing an array of fine cheeses to the heart of the capital.

The Big Cheese stocks over 50 carefully selected varieties of cheese from Scotland, the rest of the UK, and continental Europe—with around half of the selection entirely exclusive to Edinburgh’s speciality cheese scene.

Owner Neil Cunningham said: “We’re super excited to have opened the doors to The Big Cheese, but we could never have imagined how many people have come out to support us so far.

“Seeing such an amazing turnout has been incredibly encouraging and made us realise we’ve done the right thing by bringing The Big Cheese to Broughton Street.

“We want The Big Cheese to be far more than just an artisan cheese store. We want to create a relaxed and personal customer experience and a venue that will be part of local community life in the neighbourhood I call home.”

Alongside staples like Isle of Mull cheddar and Gubbeen, local shoppers can discover unique varieties smoked over whisky barrel chips, washed in wine or brandy, and coated with garlic and chilli.

The team also includes cheesemonger Aidan McKinlay and head cheesemonger Mia Cowie. With over a decade of cheese retail experience, Mia is passionate about sharing rare finds with the community, picking artisan options like St Cera from Norfolk and raw milk Camembert de Normandie for the launch.

Commenting on the opening, Mia said: “Our mission is to celebrate great cheesemaking in all its forms and to bring the very best artisan cheeses to our community.

“Alongside the finest established cheeses, we are constantly seeking out exciting new producers, flavours, and styles to share with our customers.”

The venue at 27 Broughton Street will also host ongoing tasting events to introduce Edinburgh’s cheese lovers to new varieties, while stocking complementary products like freshly baked bread, chutney, wine, and olives.
