Lothian Buses has announced major alterations to its network to improve connectivity and reliability across the region.
Following a review of travel across Lothian Buses, NightBuses, East Coast Buses, and Lothian Country services, the Edinburgh and Lothians bus operator will implement comprehensive timetable changes and launch four new routes starting Sunday, September 13.
Significant additions include improved frequencies, route extensions, and dedicated hospital services supported by local councils.
A new Service 28 will operate between Gilmerton and Bellevue every 30 minutes, Monday to Saturday, providing direct city centre access from new developments on Gilmerton Station Road.

Service 32 will be extended from Cramond to West Granton to increase connectivity between north and west Edinburgh. Gamekeeper’s Road in Cramond will no longer be served as buses shift to Whitehouse Road and Cramond Road North.
Midlothian residents will gain two new routes connecting to the Royal Infirmary. Service 37A will operate from Penicuik, and Service 39A will run from Rosewell. Both routes will provide early morning and evening journeys to support hospital workers and visitors.
Service 7 will see its daytime frequency increased to every 15 minutes from Monday to Saturday, offering additional capacity between Leith Walk and the south side of the city.
Other notable changes include Services 17 and 18, which will no longer serve Ingliston Park and Ride due to low customer demand, remaining on Eastfield Road to improve journey times.
Service 25 will receive additional morning journeys from Waverley Steps to Heriot-Watt University to increase capacity for the new term.
Across the broader network, East Coast Buses and Lothian Country will see various route extensions and timetable adjustments to align with customer demand. Service X5 will be extended to Lothian Road to provide better access to the west of the city centre.
NightBus timetables are also being revised to improve early morning connections and connectivity after midnight, including a new journey from Clerwood to the city centre on Service N1.

Ian Murray, MP, said the new 28 route in the south of the city is “fantastic news” for Gilmerton.
He added: “This part of the city has seen significant housing development in recent years, but up until now bus services have not kept pace with this growth.
“More broadly, I have been pushing for better public transport provision for South Edinburgh for years, through my Build Better Places and Save Our Bus Routes campaigns.
“Fantastic news for residents and a big win for our communities in Gilmerton.”
