The new baby pygmy hippo at Edinburgh Zoo now has a name.
She is to be called Piper.
Keepers picked the name after the new arrival was confirmed as a little girl following her first health check by veterinary staff at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS).
The new hippo was born on Friday 31 July to parents Otto and Gloria, and is being cared for by mum, growing in strength and confidence according to her keepers.
Jade Robertson, senior hoofstock keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, said: “We all felt she was a wee girl from the moment we met her so it is good to have that hunch confirmed! We went with Piper because she’s like a little bagpipe always making cute little huffs and puffs.”
Vets at the wildlife conservation charity checked Piper’s bodyweight, gave her a warm bath, carried out a full body examination and inspected her gums and tiny teeth.
Jade added: “She’s still only a dot at the moment weighing just under 5.5 kilos. She will soon start piling on the pounds because her mum’s milk is so rich and nutritious.
“As Piper gets bigger we’ll start to see more of her personality. She will become more adventurous and confident spending time exploring her home while still sticking close to Gloria.”
Dr Stephanie Mota, head vet at RZSS, said: “I was really pleased with mum and baby during the health check. Gloria did a great job raising Amara and Haggis, and she’s very comfortable with the keepers and vets knowing we are there to help. It was lovely to meet Piper up close and confirm she is doing really well.”
Gloria and Piper are taking things slowly as they continue to bond. Lucky visitors may be able to spot mum and daughter over the coming days.
