Play was suspended again at 19.55 as the fog rolled in again from the North Sea to blanket the 7,000-plus yard course and send the thousands of fans scurrying for the exits.

It was a dreich end to a day which has seen marked changes in the leaderboard and a first suspension at 10.45am which was re-started at 13.10.

It was also a day in which Rory McIlroy, one of the joint leaders on nine-under overnight, slipped three shots to be tied for 25th when the call to come in was made.

There are two leaders now in American golfer Michael Thorbjornsen, who was five-under after playing 13 holes, and in-form, Sheffield-born, Matt Fitzpatrick, the world No 4, who was on minus three today, and who are on ten-under-par with six men within a shot.

They are Min Woo Lee (Australia), American, Chris Gotterup, the defending champion, Wyndham Clark, the newly-crowned US Open winner, plus 25-year-old former college golfer, Johnny Keefer, and Englishman Jordan Smith plus another American, Kevin Roy.

Three players are on nine-under, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen from Denmark, minus-five today and nine-under overall, South Korean star, Tom Kim, even today, and Scotland-born, Robert McIntyre, who was two-under when the players were called in.

There is no indication yet as to when the unfinished rounds will be completed but the weather forecast for North Berwick on Sunday is for cloud, a high of around 16c, 20 per cent chance of rain and a wind of 18kmh.
