New signing Callum Wright has reflected on the 1-1 draw against the reigning Primeira Liga champions and his time at the Club so far in an exclusive interview with Hibernian Media.
“It was a really good game, a really good pre-season game to be a part of,” said Wright.
“They (FC Porto) were pretty much full of strength, so it was a very good result for us.
“It was an amazing test, and we came through it. It was a tough game, and we probably didn’t have much possession, but we came through it with a 1-1 result against a very good side.
“We’re progressing well, and hopefully we can keep progressing in the next two weeks.
“It’s been a bit of a hectic trip, but it’s replicated what we’re going to be coming up against in Europe in terms of travelling the day before, getting a training session in on the night and then preparing for the game, so it’s been a great few days.
“It’s a different game to what we’ve had so far, and there’s a lot out of position. They were really good in possession, but they’re one of the top teams in the world.
“They will be in the UEFA Champions League this year, won their league last year and have top players and top talent.
“It’s been nice to put the shirt on both times this week.
“I had a little setback when I signed, so I’m a week behind the lads, but getting the two games in last week was important for me because I know I can kick on in the next games before the season starts.”
Wright says his former Wigan Athletic team-mate Jason Kerr has helped him settle quickly but the No6 is one of many people who have helped him become accustomed to life at Easter Road.
He added: “The lads are lovely, and we’ve got a really good bunch of lads. The staff are great, so it’s been pretty easy to settle in here, and that’s without kicking the ball for the first two weeks.
“When you’re playing football, that’s where you really settle in, and the lads buy into you if you’re performing on the pitch.
“It’s been good, and hopefully I can keep getting better and keep kicking on.
“The young lads are top lads, and the senior lads are also top lads as well. I get on with everyone. I’m quite social, so it’s alright.
“It’s nice coming in with Jason [Kerr], who I played with at Wigan, and familiar faces are important.
“I got on really well with him last year, and I get on very well with him now as well.
“I’ve been really impressed with the Head Coach and his staff, and the detail is amazing.
“It’s exactly what he told me I was coming into, and that’s what I’ve seen in the first few weeks.
“I’m really excited to play for him and to just learn and develop.”
With Hibs final pre-season fixture coming at home against Danish Superliga side Brøndby IF this weekend weekend, the No23 says he is excited to play in front of our own supporters for the first time.
He said: “I can’t wait. It’s going to be a tough game against a good side, but it’s exactly what we need.
“Hopefully I can get a run out, and I can’t wait to play in front of the fans.
“I’ve said that since I’ve come here, and I’ve heard amazing things, so I can’t wait to get out there and put on a show for them.”
