Edinburgh has outpaced London as the UK’s premier hub for university spin-outs, helping to drive a massive 74% surge in Scotland’s total equity investment value.

The British Business Bank’s annual Small Business Equity Tracker, published on Thursday 2 July, shows that Scotland defied a UK-wide venture capital slump in 2025.

Edinburgh became the focal point of this growth, with the city’s commercial and academic sectors securing high-value funding rounds even as London’s traditional market dominance declined.

The capital’s academic sector led the charge, with Scotland completing 45 university spinout deals compared to London’s 28.

The University of Edinburgh was named the country’s most active research institution, securing 16 separate spinout deals to place in the UK’s top three.

The city’s private tech sector also secured a historic victory. Edinburgh-based battery storage company Fidra Energy secured £445m in funding, marking the largest UK seed-stage venture round since 2020.

This single energy transaction helped push Scotland’s total investment value up by nearly three-quarters, despite a general reduction in overall deal volumes.

Mark Sterritt, director at the British Business Bank, noted that Edinburgh’s research base has proven exceptionally resilient in translating cutting-edge science into high-growth companies.

Mark said: “The continued resilience of Scotland’s spinout ecosystem is especially encouraging.

“We know that access to finance remains critical, particularly for early-stage businesses navigating tougher market conditions, which is why the Investment Fund for Scotland plays such an important role in helping ambitious ventures across the country.”

The bank continues to support Edinburgh entrepreneurs through its dedicated £150m Investment Fund for Scotland, which offers funding packages ranging from small loans up to £5m in equity.
