TEAM Scotland has named bowls star Alex Marshall, who was born in Edinburgh, and judoka, Sarah Adlington, as flagbearers for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The pair will carry the Saltire and the King’s Baton into The Hydro during Thursday’s opening ceremony.
Marshall, matching Willie Wood’s record of eight Commonwealth Games appearances, is Scotland’s most decorated athlete in the competition with five golds, one silver, and one bronze.
The 59-year-old, who practices at Gifford Bowls Club and East Lothian Indoor Bowling Club first competed at Victoria 1994, adds this honour to a career that includes 14 World Indoor gold medals.
Adlington, the first Scottish judoka to win two Commonwealth golds following victories at Glasgow 2014 and Birmingham 2022, will be competing in her final Games as she aims for a third gold medal in the +78kg category.
The athletes were chosen by their peers to lead the host nation into the July 23 ceremony at the OVO Hydro, which will be the first Commonwealth Games opening ceremony to be staged entirely indoors.
Alex Marshall said: “Walking into The Hydro carrying the Saltire, with the support of a Scottish crowd behind us and my family watching on will be a truly special occasion.”
Sarah Adlington added: “Representing Scotland has always meant so much to me, so to have the opportunity to lead this team into a home Commonwealth Games is a real privilege that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.”
The Games will run until August 2, with over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competing.
