Most of us love good weather, do we not? But spare a passing thought for businesses that rely on people heading indoors.

Businesses like cinemas. Businesses like Filmhouse! The moment good weather hits, the difference is apparent. Films just don’t do as well admissions-wise as you might expect them to when the sun is out, though the sunny spells tend not to last that long. And when good weather does overstay its welcome (!), it doesn’t generally take long for people to start taking it for granted and resume normal (indoor) activity, thankfully.

By the way, via some very recent renovations, all our screens are now, for the first time, temperature controlled, so if the summer heat gets a bit too much, you know where to come!

It’ll take more than good weather I suspect to keep people away from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic Homer adaptation, The Odyssey (released July 17) – undoubtedly the cinema event of the year so far. We’re very excited to be the only Edinburgh cinema to be playing the film from a 70mm print, which is going to look spectacular. I’ll go as far as to say there will be no better place to see it than Filmhouse.

Filmhouse, in its new incarnation, has just turned ONE, and we’ve taken the opportunity to sprinkle our July programme with many of the highlights from that opening year, plus a selection of films chosen by our lovely staff and our members, a number of the latter of which have already berated us for giving them far too many unmissable opportunities to pay us a visit in July!

And reading the news this morning, I came across an article detailing a recent screening of Taxi Driver at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, attended by Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese and I briefly wondered what it would be like running a cinema with potential guests like that living on your doorstep…!?

Oh well, we’ll just have to make do with a few screenings of this undisputed masterpiece, which has been given the 4K restoration treatment, in this the, incredibly, 50th anniversary of its making.
