Derek McInnes was minutes away from securing the William Hill Premiership title for Hearts for the first time in 66 years, but now media reports strongly indicate that he will switch to Ibrox.

Rangers current boss, Danny Rohl, looks set to become head coach at Austrian combine, RB Salzburg, clearing the way for a switch along the M8 for the former Aberdeen and Kilmarnock manager.

Of course, McInnes (pictured) already has links with the Glasgow club having been a squad player for five years at Ibrox, making over 50 appearances.

The 54-year-old dragged Hearts from seventh spot in the 12-strong Premiership in the previous season to the runners-up position last term, being in pole position for several months before that fateful day at Celtic Park.

Paisley-born McInnes, if Rohl goes and the Scot agrees to sign for the Glasgow giants, will take over a club which finished third in the league with 72 points from their 38 fixtures.

Hearts finished with 80 points, two adrift of Celtic, who beat Rangers in the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup. The Ibrox side also exited the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup at the quarter-final stage to their Old Firm rivals.

Ibrox fans crave silverware and they as they have not celebrated a league triumph since Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, did so before leaving in November 2021.

If McInnes arrives then he would link up again with Lawrence Shankland, a man who captained Hearts last season and a player he rates highly.

The Glasgow-born striker, a boyhood fan of Rangers, has been the Ibrox side’s first confirmed signing since the end of the season.
