Fancy a weekend getaway, walking, fishing, sightseeing or just chilling? Then you will find a hideaway to suit all your needs at Blair Atholl Estates. There is a wealth of accommodation in varying price ranges (dependent on the time of year and length of stay).
Prices start at £45 per night ranging up to £5,000 per week. Whether you are looking for a camp site, glamping pods, cottages, lodges for couples up to a house sleeping 16 (for a wedding), there will be something on Blair Athol Estate to suit.
Four-legged friends are welcome as most of the accommodation is dog friendly. (though a supplement is payable). Take a look at their website here. Staff are friendly and helpful throughout the booking process and during the visit.
Blair Castle
If you are staying in Blair Atholl Estates accommodation, you also have the opportunity to enjoy a self-guided tour of Blair Castle and gardens for free. Their guides are knowledgeable and bring the public spaces and displays to life.
There is so much to see and do you could spend all day there. If you get peckish there is a café on site or alternatively in good weather take a picnic. Be prepared for a walk as the gardens extend to almost 9 acres with lots to occupy little ones both in the castle and also in the play areas and woods.
They also cater for weddings. Imagine getting married in a fairytale Perthshire setting in the castle or grounds. Take a look. It’s a wonderful day out.
Charlottefield Cottage
I had the good fortune to have the choice of Charlottefield, a 2 bedroom, self-catering cottage for a weekend away with friends. The cottage sleeps four comfortably and is in an idyllic location not far from Ballinluig.
After a bumpy ride from the main road up a track (not designed for low slung cars), Charlottefield nestles into the hillside in front of birch and larch woods. The cottage is well equipped and cosy with shabby chic furnishings, comfy beds and a wood burning stove for cold evenings. Outside there was a hot tub for two and barbeque facilities. Both are under cover for the not so sunny days.
We were glad of the comprehensive guide to managing the cottage. Thoughtfully, several maps of local walks ranging from 6 to 30 kms were included.
Ideally situated for a quiet break, or if you ventured out, Dunkeld and Pitlochry with its beautiful theatre were an easy drive away. Highly recommended for a secluded break or a walking/cycling experience for the more adventurous.
House of Bruar
Following a visit to Blair Castle and Gardens we headed to House of Bruar for lunch. The array of food on offer was staggering. Everything from soup and a sandwich to oysters, gravalax and roast beef with all the trimmings, accompanied by a sumptuous range of cakes, puddings and home baking. The restaurant and deli pride themselves on sourcing the best Scottish produce and the taste, wow!!
Some allergies are catered for but best to check options. You can take your time and savour the food. It is well worth a visit anytime travelling up or down the A9.
The restaurant was busy but as it is self service the queue didn’t take long to disappear. If you fancy fish and chips there is a separate restaurant across the courtyard. It wouldn’t be summer without ice cream and the ice cream wagon outside doesn’t disappoint. They also sell take away coffee if you need an injection of caffeine.
Retail Therapy – at House of Bruar you can buy everything from chocolate to a Barbour jacket. Known for its country clothing there is an extensive range of men’s, women’s and childrenswear to suit most budgets.
On the other side of the restaurant there is a deli with a butcher, baker and an extensive range of confectionery. Heading out to the front courtyard you can also buy fresh fruit, veg and plants.
Why not make a day of it. You won’t be disappointed.
