Edinburgh-born and ECA graduate Sarah Hutchison this month celebrates 15 years of her much-loved Morningside gallery, SH Jewellery, a precious gem in the capital’s jewellery crown.
She celebrated the milestone with a party which boasted a sparkling guest list including some of Edinburgh’s most loved contemporary jewellers.
Having weathered a global pandemic, the fallout from Brexit and a cost-of-living crisis, Hutchison has proved herself to be a small business owner who moves with the times and who is not afraid to innovate.
In 2023, Hutchison launched her Preloved range online, offering — alongside the many new silver, gold and platinum pieces in her gallery, by makers from around the world – pre-owned, handmade, contemporary pieces, at around half their original selling price.
The ground-breaking model — which helps to address the important issue of sustainability in the jewellery industry, as well as offering clients a chance to sell their unworn pieces, and others a chance to offer them a new home and a second chance to sparkle – has been a huge word-of-mouth hit.
In the two-and-a-half years since Preloved was launched, over 2,500 pieces have been listed for sale, with more than 1,800 already finding new homes.
Such has been the success of the Preloved range that Hutchison is marking fifteen years in business by making an exciting, forward-thinking change to her Morningside Road gallery space, which will now be equally split between brand new pieces from the 20 designers she still stocks, and Preloved pieces, all on display and available to buy both in store and online.
“It feels like exactly the right time to make this exciting change to my business”, Hutchison explains. “Preloved has been a massive success – it’s bigger than I could ever have dreamed – and although it’s a lot of work to assess, clean, photograph and market the pre-owned pieces ready for sale again, it’s so rewarding, and it’s a project I feel so passionately about, that I’m happy to spend those hours for the small commission I take from sales.
“Sustainability has long been a problem in the jewellery industry, and although I wouldn’t be naïve enough to think that I’m even beginning to solve it, I do think that personal agency is a really important factor for small business owners, and this is a project that I know is working for the greater good.
“In just a couple of years, I’ve gone from having Preloved as an online-only range to having dedicated cabinets in the gallery year-round, and now to having a fifty-fifty split in store of new and Preloved pieces for sale.
“It’s been a huge and exciting shift, and one that my loyal clientele and the many contemporary jewellers I work with have gone through with me. I couldn’t have asked for more support or enthusiasm – it’s been overwhelming in the very best possible way.”
