An Edinburgh art gallery has announced a new solo exhibition of paintings from acclaimed contemporary Scottish artist Andy Cross.
Landlines opens in Morningside Gallery on 28 March and includes 35 new landscape and still life paintings which showcase the artist’s distinctive handling of line and colour and his considered observations of nature.
Born in Hamilton, Andy graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing. After pursuing a career in teaching Andy decided to devote his time to painting full-time. Most of Andy’s inspiration comes from the surrounding countryside of his home in South Lanarkshire as well as his frequent sojourns to France. From damp, stormy Scottish weather to the sunlit vistas of Provence, Andy evokes atmosphere, and the unique light and weather conditions in each of his landscape paintings.
Each painting quietly celebrates the natural world; whether exploring the changing seasonal light on a landscape or the rich tones of a domestic still life, subjects spring to life on the canvas. The living legacy of Joan Eardley can be felt in Andy’s paintings – an artist loved by many contemporary Scottish landscape painters, and a huge inspiration to Andy, echoes of her palette and compositional choices are clear in his work. The Morningside Gallery exhibition coincides with a new exhibition celebrating Joan Eardley at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
Eileadh Swan, director of Morningside Gallery said: “We’re really looking forward to sharing this beautiful new exhibition of Andy’s work. His brush seems to dance; never still for long, large gestural brushstrokes create atmosphere-filled skies, thin suggestions of line delineate sky from land, and a final flick of the brush tells us all we need to know about the wildflower.”
The gallery will display 35 new paintings for the exhibition, which can also be viewed online and toured as a virtual exhibition for anyone who is unable to make it to Edinburgh.
The exhibition will run in the gallery from 28 March to 12 April and is open to the public, with a Private View on Saturday 28th March from 2 – 4pm.
