The staff at Erskine Edinburgh Home took residents and their loved ones out to Roger’s Afternoon Tea and Café to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
This was a part of the social outing programme which Erskine arrange on a regular basis, and was declared a great success.
Ashley Kvasiliene is Erskine Edinburgh House Manager. She said: “Our registered nurse Kirsty Brown liaised with the café last year, and at Christmas time we arranged our first outing.
“For us community engagement is key, and this time we invited residents and their spouses or their families to join us. The big thing is seeing other people, no matter what your health – and even if you are in a home you can still have that community link.
“The cakes I enjoyed best were the strawberry tarts. They were a favourite with all the guests.
“It was also nice to see our residents out and about, and they knew the place having been to Roger’s before. The staff at the café are so welcoming, and to see a smile on our residents’ faces and to see the engagement is just really nice.
“We are working with the staff there to start a dementia café which would be opened up to other people in the locality living with dementia. This is in the early stages but we could support it, bring our residents there, and offer information and signposting to families with a programme like this.
“It was just nice to give residents and their families time outwith the home and everyone got a red rose to give to their family for Valentine’s.”
The Erskine Edinburgh Home in Gilmerton opened in 2002, and provides 24 hour care for 40 residents living with dementia or who have other nursing needs.
