A community fundraising walk will take place 7 March along the Water of Leith, from Balerno to The Shore in Leith to raise awareness of the global water crisis.
The walk aims to connect the well-known Edinburgh route along one of our blue corridors with the global reality. There are millions of people, especially women and children in sub-Saharan Africa, who walk several miles every day to collect water for their families.
The walk is organised by Edinburgh resident Matt Murphy, who works full-time in renewable energy and who also volunteers with Africa Access Water (AfAW).The event is designed to bring local communities together while highlighting the transformative impact of reliable water access.
Africa Access Water delivers solar-powered water systems that provide clean drinking water while supporting agriculture, food security and income generation in rural communities. To date, AfAW projects have provided clean water to over 30,000 people and supported more than 6,000 households in becoming food secure.
Anyone wishing to take par can join for part of or the whole route or alternatively anyone may support the fundraiser through donations. The walk will pass through several neighbourhoods along the Water of Leith, and Matt hopes it will encourage community involvement across the city.
The walk highlights how access to clean water underpins health, education and economic opportunity worldwide.
